Hollow Turning - John Jordan

Hollow Turning will guide you through the steps in making deep hollow turnings with a small opening at the top. John Jordan is well known for his expertise in this area of woodturning. John does an excellent job of taking the mystery out of the process of making these vessels. Topics and techniques covered are: grain orientation, shear cutting, turning a small necked bottle, carved decoration, sanding, and finishing.

Turned Boxes – The Capsule Box - Ray Key

One of the most popular boxes is the capsule box, shown in the video. The step-by-step sequence of turning a capsule box shows how to turn a box with matching grain and spigot type lid. Sanding, finishing, re-chucking and finishing the base is also shown. The remaining stock is used to show how to make a “coolie” box. This is a short, squatty box, with the lid shape similar to a hat.

Turned Boxes – The Finial Box - Ray Key

The Graceful, traditional design of this box creates new challenges for the woodturner. Ray Key’s enthusiasm for the fine turned box, plus his skill as a world-class woodturner are shown as he turns the finial box. Using graphic charts, Ray leads the viewer through clearly defined steps and shares his views on design, scale and proportion.

At the lathe, Ray demonstrates the process of making the box from mounting the wood in the lathe to the final finish. Topics included are techniques for holding the lid and the base for working on all surfaces, tips on cutting, proper tool use, special tools he has developed, finishing techniques and materials.

Innovative camera techniques allow the viewer to see the tools and the work as though seeing it through Ray’s eyes. Cutting techniques, angles of the tools for different cuts, holding the tool, etc. are clearly seen.
